iMac (17” Flat Panel, 1GHz)

Introduced: February 2003
Terminated: September 2003

Description

The iMac (17” Flat Panel, 1GHz) brought the speed of the iMac up to 1.0Ghz.  It had a 80Gb hard drive and 256Mb of RAM and 64Mb of VRAM.  It had a SuperDrive.

History

The new speed bump of the iMac line also simplified it.  Rather than having three or four models, there were only two, the 15” and the 17”.  The 17” model had a number of upgrades like AirPort Extreme support, internal Bluetooth and Double Data Rate (DDR) RAM.

The 15” configuration was $1299 and the 17” configuration was $1799.

Comments

  • Similarly, though the graphics chipset in some recent models is on a removable MXM, neither Apple nor third parties have offered retail iMac GPU upgrades, with the exception of those for the original iMac G3’s “mezzanine” PCI slot. Models after the iMac G5 excluding the August 7, 2007 iMac update made it difficult for the end-user to replace the hard disk or optical drive, and Apple’s warranty explicitly forbids upgrading the socketed CPU.-Jonathan Berkowitz
